Call for Art: "FIGURES: Art Depicting the Human Figure"

We invite artists to submit works that explore the human figure, celebrating its complexity, beauty, and diversity. This exhibition seeks to showcase a wide range of interpretations, from traditional representations to innovative, contemporary depictions. Whether through realistic portrayals or abstract expressions, we encourage artists to explore the body’s shape, movement, and symbolism in a way that reflects both the universal and the personal.

We welcome submissions in all media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and digital art. This exhibition is an opportunity to reflect on the profound role the human form plays in art history and its ongoing relevance in contemporary artistic practice.

  • $26 per submission or $52 for three submissions

  • Artist Statement

  • Images MUST be filed in this format: Name_Title.jpeg (ex: JaneDoe_Title.jpeg)

  • Images must be at least 300 DPI

  • Everything must be submitted before April 18th, 2025

We look forward to seeing how you engage with the human figure for this exciting exhibition!

See Artwork by Joe Sikora at J9 Wine Bar

Join us at J9 Wine Bar to see the work of CFAS’s founder Joe Sikora’s art!

Along with updated work from Joe’s personal collection, there will be a wine tasting and vernissage on February 6th from 5-8 PM. We hope to see you there!

A vernissage (from French, originally meaning "varnishing") is a preview of an art exhibition, which may be private, before the formal opening. If the vernissage is not open to the public but only to invited guests, it is often called a private view. We invite all of you to come to this private viewing!

Open until 2/28: Charlie Goss’s “Inner Beauty, Outer Expression”

This collection of figurative oil paintings delves into the complexities of the human form, challenging conventional beauty standards and celebrating the power of inner strength. By employing bold colors, expressive gestures, and the evocative power of the face, these works invite viewers to engage in a profound and personal dialogue with the subjects depicted.

The paintings aim to dismantle the idealized notion of female beauty, often imposed by societal expectations. Instead, they highlight the inherent beauty that radiates from within, rooted in individuality, resilience, and vulnerability.

Through the use of expressive brushwork and vibrant colors, the paintings convey a sense of depth and emotion. The faces, in particular, serve as portals into the souls of the subjects, inviting viewers to contemplate their own experiences and emotions. The interplay of light and shadow further enhances the dimensionality of the figures, creating a sense of presence and intimacy.

Chicago Artist Emma Stine’s “Digesting//Disrupting: The Golden Babies” on View until 2/28

Born and raised in New Hampshire, Emma Stine received a dual degree in Fine Arts and Italian Studies from the University of New Hampshire. During that time she studied oil painting at the Lorenzo de’Medici Institute in Florence, and attended a course on the legacy of totalitarianism in Italy at the University of Rome’s Sapienza Institute, both of which continue to influence her practice. Since coming to Chicago, her work has focused on interpersonal relationships, ideas of memory and its malleability, and the question of what it means to faithfully represent a family. Her current work aims to expand her painting vocabulary, privileging the character of the paint itself, and exploring how it can be in conversation with the illusionistic image. Emma is currently a second-year MFA candidate in the Painting & Drawing Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Emma is showing work alongside Charlie Goss on January 24th from 5 to 9 PM. We hope to see you there!
