“Onces” by Esteben La Rotta

48’’ by 24’’

Oil Paint on Plywood

$500

The grappling with the sorrow left by Colombian history, entwined with the Sisyphean trance imposed upon the new generation, my work reveals to provoke and instigate pain. I aim to evoke Vertigo, both in the flesh and the political realms. The human body becomes a landscape, confronting its reflection to gaze at the barbarism we have subjugated ourselves to. Pagan tales breathe life into my pieces, giving rise to Dionysiac feelings of corruption, inviting the spectator to partake in an intoxicating dance of carnal elegance. My journey has placed me on the streets of Chicago searching for essence, “Geist” within the hidden walls of this metropolis. Now the windy city has transformed the landscape-like bodies into city ones that, through its surface, reveal the shapes and colors of time. Marks in the wall and skin speak the tales of the “bourgeois” and its crisis. The tragedies and tales inherited from my Colombian family will breed new life into these Chicago-inspired paintings that confront us with the sorrows of the past and the bodies of the present.
