Hi, my name is M.R. I’m a self-taught photographer and lifelong Chicagoan. My goal in photography is to try and capture the way the moment makes me feel. Being able to share that feeling with others is an incredible blessing. Most of my work is in the genre of street photography centered around Chicago, telling the story of its inhabitants through candid snapshots of daily life. But my work also tells my own story – my journey of seeing myself as an artist. ’ve practiced photography since I was a teenager. I started submitting to local galleries and magazines over the past few years, but still shied away from identifying as an artist. In 2022, I won a street photography contest and grant from Sony Alpha for my piece, “Thank You.” The photo captures an everyday moment of a CTA passenger thanking the conductor. Earlier this year, I made my first sale - someone connected with “Thank You” right away and bought it before I had finished hanging it up. I never thought of myself as an artist. Just a sensitive kid from a working class home with big feelings and a cheap camera. But after seeing people engaging with my work, sharing how it makes them feel, and even wanting to hang it in their own homes – I started feeling like an actual artist. When the energy I pour into my work comes back to me full circle through the hearts of others, I feel connected and fulfilled. And maybe that’s what making art is all about.
