奶奶的围巾/ Grandma's Scarf is Always with Me
By Connie Yu
Acrylic on Canvas
24" diameter
In my work, I create an immersive heightened reality through my paintings and drawings–a slice-of-life fantasy that draws from my interests and experiences as I navigate my own being. The images I craft are from the sentimentality of my experience growing up Chinese combined with the influence of the East Asian media I consumed in my childhood to the current day that have made my eyes twinkle and my heart sparkle.
Using traditional media such as acrylic paint, washes, and detailed linework I create a universe of nostalgia, fantasy, and wonder. I focus on the sentimentality that comes from the emotional connections, memories, and experiences tied to my upbringing and family history. I try to recreate the softness and beauty of those distant moments. It's a blend of nostalgia, pride, and a deep appreciation for the lessons learned, the celebrations shared, and the bonds formed within my cultural context, as well as the things that I find beautiful, whether that be moments or simply aesthetic decisions; the characters and landscape I build are an exploration of how that all looks in translation.
