Weird skin project _transform

By Seonyoung Lee

Various yarn, Raffia, Ribbon, Rope

45” x 36”

I am working on my memories of feelings toward my vulnerability. Since I have such weird skin, I have lots of wounds and scars on my body because I get hurt easily, and it is difficult to heal. My profound discomfort with my skin comes in part because it lays bare my own vulnerability.

I weave and mend. These are my ways of representing my complicated feelings toward my skin as a physical organ but also my process as a metaphor. Weaving and mending is an act of connection: Bringing broken pieces of fabric together to heal. I use soft, fluffy material to weave and mend. Most of the colors are very neutral. It looks very soft and warm, so people never recognize that it comes from such ugly marks. Even though scars and wounds are viewed as very ugly and negative, I reimagine these marks in my artwork as symbolic of patience and healing.

Viewing how these marks affect skin texture informs the way I create weaving and manipulate texture in my pieces. Finally the outcome conveys overcoming negative emotions. I recognize empathy in the emotions tied to vulnerability—feeling weak, incomplete, and sinking into depression when one realizes a lack of strength. I would like to support people in healing their anxiousness, weakness and distress through my work.
