Casey VanderStel
Casey is a queer multimedia artist based in Chicago IL. In their art practice, Casey has explored emotion, identity, and belonging through different materials and mediums, including oil painting, printmaking, cyanotype, comics, photography, and assemblage. Casey studied painting and photography at lower education levels and the rest of their work is self-taught. They have displayed art in traveling shows, literature magazines, and community spaces, but what they love most is creating art for active audiences. Casey’s work emphasizes the connection between attention and awe, and what emerges when one is curious enough to look beyond a first glance.
The viewer is invited to step into the detail and diversity of nature and consider their place within it. Through a focus on imagination, beauty, and locality, the artist uses their work to ground into place and explore ideas of belonging, home, and communion with nature and with the rest of humanity.
Casey hopes their work can be a small part of using imagination to envision a better world.
