Jour'ne Thompson

I’m Jour’ne, a multimedia artist from the Southside of Chicago. In all honesty, sometimes I just make art because it will look cool. On the other hand, I make art that either offers an escape from reality, or gives a deeper look into how life affects my thought process. I do this through themes like mental health, power in womanhood, and connection to nature. There’s a consistency behind the absence of pupils and presence of third eyes in my work. This signifies the importance of imaging and considering the universe beyond what you can see. Whether that be seeing a different reality, or the truth within our own.

Acrylic paint is my go-to medium. I’m drawn to the range of colors and opportunities to change the work as many times as I please. Using ink is where I explore my technical skills, as it requires much more intention and thought. Digital art is the sweet point where I can combine the two. I get the freedom of painting, but also the option to work in intricate details that I may not be able to do on a canvas.

I’m not fond of explaining my artwork, more so interested in what others interpret from it. I can’t always pinpoint what a piece of mine is trying to convey. Sometimes I don’t find a message in my work until it’s finished. My process is the portal to my escape. I get lost and come out in the end with something unexpected from what I originally “planned”. I'm eager to meet other individuals who can find ways to relate to my work. Sometimes I hear interpretations that I never considered, and that’s exactly what I look forward to when sharing.
