Esmeralda Montgomery
My current practice deals with philosophical enquiries into the experience of being seen. Often my work combines fragmented urban imagery with found and created symbols to acknowledge the relationships between person and object in space. The small-scale oil paintings allow for intimate consideration of the interactions of objects and non-objects, and our recognition of each other in space. By simplifying otherwise recognisable metropolitan imagery, I obscure the ordinary and insist viewers see past the bias of immediate knowledge. I break down identifiable objects to their most bare, stripping them of functionality and urging a closer, slower look.
I focus on how one can become part of an urban landscape through absolute observation and reflection. In my most recent work, I address the idea of aloneness; a solo object in an atmospheric space. The object is grounded in our ability to somewhat recognise what it is, while simultaneously being unable to recognise the space it is in, creating a conflict of understanding. Similarly, I am cognisant of my paintings being objects themselves and consider them in three dimensions to create a unique correlation to their subject matter. The subjects depicted in the works may be grand in size yet almost entirely unobserved. Painting them at a delicate scale makes them approachable without being overwhelming.
