24" x 42" Acrylic on Canvas

A native of Nebraska, Katie Meuser has experienced openness, breadth, and a variety of landscapes that have shaped her pieces through her artistic journey into the modern spaces of her Chicago home. In the open country, Katie has seen splendor in chaos and control living in harmony, and has been able to focus these ideas into a contemporary style of non-objective and expressionist abstract art with an emphasis on figures, color fields, and moving hues in her pieces. Through her evolving process of color ratios and meticulously expanding, water-like designs Katie has found inspiration in the change and movement of the tones across large canvases and the opportunities her large-scale formats have to offer.

Breasts, abdomen, thighs, and a clean curated mons pubis is the focal point of my piece, Just Bodies. These are the most important parts of the female body, some would like you to believe. Women should be seen and not heard and the most valued woman is one that does not talk back and greets everyone with a smile. My piece explores the idea of women's bodies as a baby-making tool, stripped of humanity, and sheds light on the juxtaposition of how women are valued for creating life, yet endure pain and scrutiny from society. The use of warm and cold colors coursing through and around the bodies communicates the message of womanhood and violence through symbolism. The two harsh lines interact with the bodies and provide direction for your eyes to lead you through this story of two women that are nothing more than Just Bodies.
