Self-Portrait in Fabric

By Ben Argenta Kress

My piece explores opacity in material as well as in expression. Just as shining a light through the work reveals a figure, my work is revealing something hidden, a truth about the person portrayed. With each project, the tedious manipulation of fabric scraps slowly brings to light this truth. The pieces are meant to be viewed both lit from behind in a dim room and from in front. I am primarily interested in that moment where the perspective shifts. What can we learn about one another through revelation? How do we admire the beauty of parts kept hidden? These are questions central to the pieces in my “Translucency” series and certainly central to this piece, which is a self-portrait and was the first of the series.
