By Ezra Agustín
My name is Ezra Agustín and I am a photographer based out of Minneapolis currently pursuing my BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I believe in the preservation of memory, of community, and of our humanity. I explore identity through my work by allowing my camera to be a vessel for retrospection - to make memory tangible through analog processes and distribution. I shoot on film because memory is captured within every frame, within the physicality of the negatives.
Medium: 35mm B+W Film
Size: 12" by 12"
Date Completed: 2021

I grew up in a migrant household where our history had been fragmented due to displacement. Art was a commodity we did not have the privilege to take part in. A lack of family archive left a void in my identity- the only proof of our family’s survival was my existence, but there was nothing to look back on for guidance. Many years of my childhood were spent yearning for answers, for representation, and to see others like me out in the world doing more than just surviving. I found a visual language through photography- a world of emotions in each frame.
Most of my work takes the form of zines- independently published books printed on accessible materials- because I believe in accessible communication and the ability to share a physical part of myself with others. My practice captures my experiences and my love for the world around me in order to make my life evidential even in the smallest of ways. I just want to feel alive.
