Chemistry is an oil painting series exploring my love for intimacy, music, and vibrant colors. Each piece depicts a couple in an intimate setting, inspired by the lyrics or tone of a specific song. The color palette for each painting is also inspired by each respective song. Though usually pulled from the musical artist’s aesthetic, the palette could also represent the colors I personally see/feel when listening to their music. As a response to the constant negative discourse on love and dating in today’s world, I wanted to capture the unifying themes of love, peace, nostalgia, and escapism as a reminder of the magical feel of true romance with the right partner. A red, sultry bedroom scene, F**k a Title extends Chemistry’s scope beyond the quiet, wholesome moments of previous entries. Rihanna, an unapologetically sexual artist, voices her desires throughout her song "Yeah, I Said It". Her confidence inspired the decision for the viewpoint to be looking up at the woman in a controlling position. The title is a direct quote of lyrics from "Yeah, I Said It". It’s also an example of why Chemistry prioritizes intimacy rather than romance. Intimacy exists in different forms and can be explored throughout all relationships types, even casual ones.
