"The Switchman" by Sandra Rhodes
Oil Paint on Canvas
10’’ by 20’’
$1200
As an artist who has journeyed through the profound experience of a kidney transplant, my art serves as a celebration of life, resilience, and the beauty of human connection. My work, centered on figurative portraiture, is a testament to the intricate narratives that define us and the shared experiences that bind us together.
Growing up in the rugged beauty of southeastern Kentucky, I was nurtured by the rolling hills and the steadfast spirit of a community that knew how to endure hardships. To cope with difficulties, I turned to art. My childhood, shaped by the simplicity and struggles of poverty, and the deaths of both my mother and father of cancer by the time I was nine years old, instilled in me a profound appreciation for the human experience, which I now channel into portraiture. Each stroke is a homage to the resilience and complexity of the human spirit, a testament to the strength that lies within vulnerability.
