"Strange Neighbors 3" by Jay Thompson
Acrylic on Board
11’’ by 14’’
Thinking about economic inequality and the environment, I turned to houses where I found photos of small houses that had a personality and wanted to paint these in the midst of surreal backgrounds to elevate their strangeness and beauty while expressing tension between background and the central image. Images of abandoned big box retail stores I found, still had a certain beauty but could signify the vestiges of late-stage capitalism. I also delved into abstraction. As a self-taught artist my influences include Thiebaud, Hopper, Hockney, and the Chicago Imagists.
