Rachel Lee
Rachel (b. 1994) is an artist working and living in Chicago, IL and was born and raised in Miami, FL. Her current work deals with her frustration over the lack of care of Florida's environment and historic preservation, as well as a newfound obsession of pre-20th century cemeteries.
She writes, "As a Miami native, I've observed the state deteriorate throughout my life; it always comes down to pollution, an apathetic population, and leadership that refuses to acknowledge the problems we face. It bothers me daily, and I regularly wonder if it'll be impossible to visit at some point in my lifetime so long as climate change escalates and hungry developers keep picking at this fragile land. At this point its a matter of encountering what is left of Old Florida before it disappears, which includes ghost towns, swampland, abandoned architecture and anything else at risk of being forgotten or bulldozed."
In line with this fixation on things slipping away, she regularly visits historic cemeteries around the Chicagoland area and beyond. Especially interesting to her are pioneer and rural cemeteries, the final resting places of citizens whose identities are nearly lost to time and only have degrading grave markers to prove they ever existed. These places are the remaining evidence of early local history for communities throughout the country and they are regularly in danger of disappearing entirely, whether by abandonment or new construction.
