"Taking the Long View" by PJ Hiller

12’’ by 9’’
The Vessel series explores the relationship between large terracotta urns and cultivated garden spaces. These small-scale compositions examine how simple clay forms anchor designed environments and create moments where craft and nature converge. The vessels' warm tones interact with surrounding vegetation as they transform with the passage of time through developed patinas. Working in an intimate format allows me to capture often-overlooked details that become focal points in my compositions, like the varied cores of chopped wood revealing their growth rings, sunlight filtering through translucent leaves, and the texture of weathered stone walls, brick stairs and tiled walkways. These small pieces invite closer inspection, drawing viewers into a more intimate relationship with elements. Each piece captures a moment of discovery. The paths and plantings invite viewers to imagine moving through these spaces, encountering the vessels as points of reflection. My work celebrates these designed yet evolving environments and our drive to shape surroundings while maintaining connections to the natural world.
